World's Smallest Post Office

The Ochopee Post Office is a tiny wooden building along the Tamiami Trail in Ochopee, Florida, a settlement that began in the early 1920s as a one-family tomato farm started by James Gaunt. After the town's original post office burned down, residents pressed a small storage shed, once used to hold irrigation pipes, into service as a replacement, and it has operated as an active U.S. Post Office ever since. The federal government absorbed much of the surrounding farmland in the 1970s to help conserve the Everglades, and the post office now sits within Big Cypress National Preserve, established in 1974 as one of the first national preserves in the country.
