How to iron on your patch

Every Scout patch has a heat-activated iron-on backing. You’ll need an iron, a firm heat-safe surface, and a thin cloth or tea towel.

  1. Set your iron to its highest cotton setting and turn steam off.
  2. Place the item on a firm surface and pre-heat the spot for a few seconds.
  3. Position the patch where you want it, embroidered side up.
  4. Cover the patch with a thin cloth, then press the iron down firmly for 30–40 seconds. Don’t slide it — press straight down.
  5. Let it cool completely, then check the edges. If a corner lifts, cover and press again for another 20–30 seconds.

For a permanent hold, especially on items you’ll wash often, add a few stitches around the edge. Turn garments inside out and wash cold to keep the patch looking its best.

Tip: iron-on backing doesn’t bond well to nylon, leather, or waterproof fabrics — sew those on instead.
