Iron-on patch

Westport

$8.00

Westport is a historic neighborhood and one of Kansas City's main entertainment districts, about three miles south of downtown. It grew from John Calvin McCoy's trading post into West Port, an outfitting town whose road north to a Missouri River landing helped give rise to the Town of Kansas, the settlement that became Kansas City. By 1850 West Port and Kansas had overtaken Independence as the starting point for traders and emigrants on the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. The Civil War's Battle of Westport was fought nearby in October 1864, and Kansas City annexed the town in 1897. Kelly's Westport Inn, built as a store in 1851, is the oldest surviving building in Kansas City, and the streets around Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue are now the center of an entertainment district of bars, restaurants and live music.
