Iron-on patch

West Bottoms

$8.00

The West Bottoms is the historic industrial neighborhood on the river flats just west of downtown Kansas City, below the bluffs where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. It was founded as a livestock and meatpacking district in 1871 and held the Kansas City Stockyards, the Live Stock Exchange and the city's first Union Depot, and Jim and Tom Pendergast organized their political machine from a saloon here. Floods in 1903 and 1951 battered the district, and after the 1951 flood the stockyards and meatpacking industry never fully recovered. Today its early-1900s brick warehouses hold antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, apartments and offices, and its haunted house attractions are among the most popular in the city.
