The Walnut Street Bridge is a 2,376-foot (724 m) truss bridge across the Tennessee River linking downtown Chattanooga with the North Shore. Built in 1889–90 and opened in 1891, it is thought to be the first non-military highway bridge across the Tennessee River, and its main spans are pin-connected Pennsylvania through trusses assembled by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio. The bridge tied the mostly white city on the south bank to the large Black workforce of Hill City on the north side, and two Black men, Alfred Blount in 1893 and Ed Johnson in 1906, were lynched from its spans; Johnson's lynching led to United States v. Shipp, the only criminal trial in the Supreme Court's history. Closed to motor vehicles in 1978, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 1993. Its north end comes ashore at Coolidge Park.
