The Tybee Island Light stands on the north end of Tybee Island, Georgia, overlooking the mouth of the Savannah River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. A tower has marked this spot since 1736, when James Oglethorpe had the first wooden one built, and the third tower, a 100-foot brick tower of 1773, was the first on the site to be lit. Confederate forces burned that tower in 1862 and took its lens as they retreated to Fort Pulaski. The 145-foot tower standing today is largely an 1867 reconstruction built on top of the surviving lower 60 feet of the 1773 tower, which is why it still counts as one of seven surviving colonial-era lighthouse towers in the United States. Restored since 1999 by the Tybee Island Historical Society, it remains an active aid to navigation, and the light station and its keepers' houses are open to the public.
