The Treaty Oak is a sprawling southern live oak in Jessie Ball duPont Park, a small park on the Southbank of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Arborists estimate the tree at around 250 years old, which may make it the oldest living thing in Jacksonville. Its trunk is more than 25 feet around, it rises about 70 feet, and its twisting limbs spread over 145 feet. No treaty was ever signed beneath it: the name comes from a 1930s Florida Times-Union campaign by journalist Pat Moran, who invented the story to save the tree, then known as the Giant Oak, from developers.
