Trap Pond State Park, near Laurel, Delaware, protects one of the northernmost natural stands of bald cypress trees in the United States, a species usually associated with swamps much farther south. The pond itself formed behind an old mill dam built to power a historic sawmill on the site. Canoeing and kayaking among the cypress trees, their trunks rising directly out of the water, are the park's signature activities. Its cypress swamp is an unusual habitat for a state as far north as Delaware.
