Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights

$8.00

Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights is a four-tiered granite, pine and stucco castle on a 44-acre hilltop site at 5041 E. Van Buren Street in Phoenix, nicknamed the 'Wedding Cake Castle' for its stacked shape. Italian immigrant Alessio Carraro built it from 1929 to 1931 as the centerpiece of a planned destination resort, and in 1931 he sold it to E. A. and Della Tovrea, who made it a private home. The City of Phoenix later bought the castle and the surrounding 44 acres, restored the building and replanted the gardens, which now hold more than 5,000 cacti of over 100 varieties, including 352 saguaros planted during the restoration. The site opened to the public on February 14, 2012, Arizona's centennial, and the Tovrea Carraro Society runs guided tours that go by tram through the cactus gardens and then through the castle's main floor and basement. Tours must be booked in advance and sell out months ahead, so there are no walk-in visits.
