Totem Bight State Historical Park

Totem Bight State Historical Park, near Ketchikan, Alaska, preserves a collection of totem poles gathered from abandoned Tlingit and Haida village sites and restored beginning in 1938 under a joint Civilian Conservation Corps and U.S. Forest Service program. The project aimed both to preserve totem-carving traditions and to employ Native carvers during the Depression. The park includes a reconstructed clan house built in traditional style. Its totem poles and clan house offer a rare, accessible introduction to Southeast Alaska's Native carving heritage.
