Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a riverfront park of more than 30 acres along the west bank of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, running from RiverPlace north to the Steel Bridge. It was built on the route of Harbor Drive, a riverfront highway whose removal beginning in 1974 was a milestone of the freeway removal movement, and it opened in 1978. The park was renamed in 1984 for Governor Tom McCall, who had backed replacing the highway with open space. A paved esplanade, a central lawn, the Salmon Street Springs fountain and the Japanese American Historical Plaza with its cherry trees line the river, and Portland Saturday Market sets up in its north end by the Burnside Bridge. The park hosts the Waterfront Blues Festival, the Oregon Brewers Festival and many Portland Rose Festival events, and in 2012 the American Planning Association named it one of America's ten great public spaces.
