Tifft Nature Preserve

$8.00

Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre nature preserve in South Buffalo and one of the largest municipal nature preserves in New York State. George Washington Tifft bought the land for a dairy farm in 1858; by 1900 it was a coal and iron ore shipping center, and in the 1950s and 1960s it became an unofficial dump before the city bought it in the 1970s for a landfill. After public outcry, a nonprofit formed in 1976, a visitor center opened in 1978, and the preserve joined the Buffalo Museum of Science in 1982. Its restored habitat, including a large cattail marsh, is an important stopover for migrating raptors and waterfowl, and Audubon named it an Important Bird Area in 1998. Five miles of trails and three boardwalks with viewing blinds are open year-round from dawn to dusk.
