The Read House is a historic hotel on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Chattanooga, on a site that has held a hotel since 1847. The first, the Crutchfield House, stood across from the Union Depot: Jefferson Davis gave a pro-secession speech in its dining room in January 1861, and during the Civil War it served as a Confederate headquarters and hospital, then as a hospital for Union soldiers wounded at Chickamauga, before it burned in 1867. Civil War surgeon John T. Read opened the Read House on the site on New Year's Day 1872. Most of that building was torn down in 1925 for today's 10-story Georgian-style hotel by Holabird & Roche, which opened on July 5, 1926, and reopened as The Read House in 2018 after a $27 million renovation. Local legend says Room 311 is haunted by Annalisa Netherly, a woman said to have died there in the 1920s or 1930s, though the name and the story vary by teller.
