The Passage at Ross's Landing

$8.00

The Passage is the pedestrian path at Ross's Landing that steps down from the Tennessee Aquarium to the Tennessee River, at the spot where Chattanooga began. Ross's Landing is considered the embarkation point of the Cherokee removal: on June 6, 1838, more than 1,500 Cherokee left here by steamboat and barge on the Trail of Tears. The wall along the walkway carries an art installation by Gadugi, a team of five Cherokee artists from Oklahoma, that symbolizes the path the Cherokee followed on their forced relocation. Its seven large carved and glazed clay medallions, each about six feet across, represent Cherokee history, religious beliefs and struggles with white settlers. The installation went in in 2005, during the redevelopment of Ross's Landing Park.
