The House of the Seven Gables, also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is a 1668 colonial mansion on the Salem waterfront built for sea captain John Turner. Nathaniel Hawthorne visited his cousin Susanna Ingersoll here, and her stories of the house's lost gables inspired his 1851 novel The House of the Seven Gables. Caroline Emmerton bought and restored the house in 1908-10, rebuilding the missing gables and adding a secret staircase inside the chimney to echo the book. Hawthorne's birthplace has since been moved onto the grounds, and the house runs as a museum and settlement house.
