The High Line

$8.00

The High Line is a 1.45-mile elevated linear park built on a disused New York Central Railroad spur on Manhattan's West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District through Chelsea to 34th Street near the Javits Center, with a spur over Tenth Avenue at 30th Street and a connector to Moynihan Train Hall. The freight viaduct opened in 1934 to lift trains off the deadly street-level tracks nicknamed "Death Avenue", and it was shut down in 1980. Friends of the High Line, founded in 1999, fought its demolition, and the park opened in sections in 2009, 2011 and 2014. Piet Oudolf's plantings draw on the wild grasses and shrubs that grew on the abandoned tracks, and by 2019 the park drew about eight million visitors a year.
