The Donut Hole

The Donut Hole is a working bakery in La Puente, California built in the shape of two giant doughnuts, through which customers drive to place their orders. It is one of the best-known surviving examples of California's mid-century programmatic architecture, in which buildings were designed to look like the products sold inside. The shop opened in the 1960s, and after the original chain went out of business in 1979, the La Puente location was purchased by the Lopez family, who kept it running as an independent bakery. Newlyweds are a local tradition, driving through the donuts for good luck on their wedding day.
