The Barnacle Historic State Park

$8.00

The Barnacle Historic State Park is a 5-acre Florida state park at 3485 Main Highway in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood. Its centerpiece is the Barnacle, the house that yacht designer Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's founders, built in 1891; it is the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing on its original site. In 1908 Munroe had the one-story bungalow lifted and a new ground floor built beneath it, and the house came through the 1926 hurricane and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 with only minor damage. The State of Florida bought the last 5 acres of his 40-acre bayfront homesite from the Munroe family in 1973. The walk in from Main Highway passes through a tropical hardwood hammock, one of the last remnants of the once vast Miami Hammock, before opening onto the house, the rebuilt boathouse and Biscayne Bay.
