The Alamo began as Misión San Antonio de Valero, a Spanish mission founded in 1718 near the headwaters of the San Antonio River. The mission was secularized in 1793, and ten years later it became a fortress for a Spanish cavalry unit, the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, which likely gave it the name Alamo. During the Texas Revolution, Texian and Tejano volunteers under co-commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis held the compound through a 13-day siege until Santa Anna's army stormed it on March 6, 1836. Eyewitness counts of the defenders killed range from 182 to 257, among them Bowie, Travis, Davy Crockett and Gregorio Esparza, whose brother served in Santa Anna's army and who was the only defender buried rather than burned. 'Remember the Alamo!' became the Texian battle cry at San Jacinto six weeks later. Today it is a museum and state shrine, and since 2015 the Alamo has been part of the San Antonio Missions UNESCO World Heritage Site.
