Texas State Cemetery

$8.00

The Texas State Cemetery covers about 22 acres just east of downtown Austin and I-35, and its roll of Texas leaders has earned it the nickname 'the Arlington of Texas.' It began in 1851, when the Legislature arranged the burial of Edward Burleson, the Texas Revolution general and Republic of Texas vice president, and in 1854 the state bought the land around his grave. During and after the Civil War it became a Confederate burial ground, and more than 2,000 Confederate veterans and widows lie in its larger section. The smaller section holds governors, legislators and other prominent Texans, among them Stephen F. Austin, reinterred here in 1910, and Barbara Jordan, the first African American woman buried in the cemetery. After years of neglect, Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock led a restoration that added a visitor center, and the cemetery was rededicated in 1997.
