Tenth Street Historic District

The Tenth Street Historic District preserves part of Tenth Street, a freedmen's town in Oak Cliff settled by formerly enslaved people after emancipation, at the foot of an African American burial ground dating to 1846. Black landownership here began in 1888, spread west into Original Oak Cliff after the Panic of 1893 and reached its peak during the Jazz Age. Its Folk Victorian houses, shotgun houses and bungalows were built largely between 1888 and 1947, many by African American carpenters. Clarendon Drive and the R.L. Thornton Freeway later cut through the neighborhood, but enough survived for Dallas to make it a landmark district in 1993 and for the National Register of Historic Places to list it in 1994. Blues guitarist T-Bone Walker and Olympic decathlete Rafer Johnson both went to the neighborhood's school.
