Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Tahquamenon Falls State Park, near Paradise, Michigan, is one of the largest and most visited state parks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Its Upper Falls is among the largest waterfalls by water volume east of the Mississippi River, dropping about 50 feet across nearly 200 feet of width. The river's amber, root-beer-colored water comes from tannins leached out of the cedar swamps it drains upstream. The Tahquamenon River is believed to have inspired the fictionalized river in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem 'The Song of Hiawatha.'
