Iron-on patch

Swope Park

$8.00

Swope Park is Kansas City's largest municipal park, 1,805 acres of woods, limestone bluffs and the Blue River valley on the city's southeast side, more than twice the size of New York's Central Park. Real estate magnate Thomas H. Swope donated the original 1,334 acres in 1896, and landscape architect George Kessler designed it to keep the land's wild and rugged character. The park holds the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, the outdoor Starlight Theatre, Swope Memorial Golf Course, the Lakeside Nature Center and the Battle of Westport Museum & Visitor Center in the old Shelter No. 1. Swope himself is buried in a Greek Doric memorial on one of the park's highest points, completed in 1918. Its segregated pool and golf course were a focus of Kansas City's civil rights struggle, and the pool reopened on an integrated basis in 1954 after a court fight.
