Iron-on patch

Sutter's Fort State Historic Park

$8.00

Sutter's Fort was the center of New Helvetia, the colony John Sutter founded in 1839 on land that was Nisenan territory, and the first non-Native settlement in California's Central Valley. Its two-story adobe main building went up between 1841 and 1843 and is the only original structure left; the walls around it are a reconstruction. The fort ran on the forced and coerced labor of Nisenan, Miwok and other Native Californians, along with Native Hawaiian workers, many of them held in conditions close to enslavement. It was a way station at the end of the California Trail, sent relief to the Donner Party, and in January 1848 was where James Marshall showed Sutter the gold found at Coloma. Saved from demolition by the Native Sons of the Golden West in 1891, it is now a state historic park and a National Historic Landmark.
