Sugar House Park

$8.00

Sugar House Park is a 110-acre regional park in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, bounded by I-80, 2100 South, 1300 East and 1700 East. From 1855 until 1951 the site held Utah's territorial and then state penitentiary, until the inmates were moved to a new prison in Draper. Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County bought the land, and in 1957 they placed it in trust with the Sugar House Park Authority to run as a park. Parleys Creek runs through the grounds, which include a 4.5-acre pond with fountains, a walking path of about 1.8 miles around the perimeter, and hills that are a popular sledding spot in winter. A monument unveiled in 2023 marks the site of the 1915 execution of labor organizer and songwriter Joe Hill.
