Iron-on patch

Strawberry Hill

$8.00

Strawberry Hill is a historic neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas, on a bluff overlooking Kaw Point, where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. It was first called Splitlog's Hill after Mathias Splitlog, a Cayuga millionaire who bought the land in 1870, and after it was subdivided it filled with Irish and German immigrants and then with Croatians and Slovenes who worked in the meatpacking plants in the bottoms below. The Slavic community built its life around its churches, including St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish, founded in 1900, and St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, founded in 1906. Interstate 70 was cut through the neighborhood in the 1950s, razing nearly a third of its homes, and the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center now preserves its Eastern European heritage.
