Starved Rock State Park, near Utica, Illinois, follows the Illinois River past 18 sandstone canyons, many with seasonal waterfalls fed by snowmelt and rain. The park's name comes from a legend describing a group of Illiniwek people who took refuge atop the park's namesake bluff and starved during a siege by rival tribes in the late 1700s, following the assassination of Ottawa chief Pontiac. French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, built Fort St. Louis atop the same bluff in the early 1680s as a base for exploring the region. Its combination of canyon scenery and river views makes it one of the most visited state parks in Illinois, drawing large crowds from the Chicago area.
