St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral

$8.00

St. Theodosius Cathedral, on Starkweather Avenue in Tremont, is considered one of the finest examples of Russian church architecture in the United States. Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants organized the parish in 1896 as Cleveland's first Eastern Orthodox congregation, and the present Neo-Byzantine cathedral, designed by Cleveland architect Frederick C. Baird from photographs of Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, was consecrated on July 20, 1913. Its thirteen copper onion domes, one large, four medium and eight small, stand for Christ and the twelve apostles, and inside are an iconostasis with icons from Russia and murals commissioned in 1953 from émigré painter Andrej Bicenko. The cathedral was the wedding church in the 1978 film The Deer Hunter and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A roofing fire in May 2024 forced the temporary removal of the main dome, and restoration is under way.
