Iron-on patch

St. Louis Cathedral

$8.00

The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, is the Catholic cathedral of New Orleans, standing on Jackson Square in the French Quarter between the Cabildo and the Presbytère. A parish church has occupied the site since the city's founding in 1718, beginning with a wooden church and a brick church completed in 1727 that burned in the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788. Its Spanish-era replacement was begun in 1789, raised to cathedral rank in 1793 and completed in 1794. That building was largely demolished and rebuilt from 1849 under plans by J. N. B. de Pouilly, so the present church and its triple-spired front date mainly from about 1850. It is often called the oldest continuously active cathedral in the United States and is the seat of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
