St. Elmo Historic District

$8.00

St. Elmo is a historic neighborhood at the southern edge of Chattanooga, in the valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain, whose late 19th- and early 20th-century houses make up the St. Elmo Historic District. The area took its name from Augusta Jane Evans's best-selling 1866 novel St. Elmo, which was set nearby. It grew into a residential community after the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park was dedicated in 1890 and an electric trolley reached it from downtown in 1893, and the Incline Railway has carried passengers from its lower station here up the mountain since 1895. St. Elmo was incorporated as a town in 1905 and annexed by Chattanooga in September 1929. Hundreds of its properties were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and the city made it a Local Historic District in 1996.
