St. Charles Streetcar

$8.00

The St. Charles Streetcar Line is a historic streetcar line in New Orleans, Louisiana, running about 6 miles from Canal Street at the edge of the French Quarter up St. Charles Avenue and South Carrollton Avenue to South Claiborne Avenue. It began in 1835 as the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad, using steam locomotives, and was later run with horse and mule cars before being electrified in 1893. Its green Perley Thomas cars, built in 1923 and 1924, travel mostly along the tree-lined neutral ground, passing the Garden District, Audubon Park, and Tulane and Loyola universities. Service was suspended after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and restored in stages through June 2008. The line is a National Historic Landmark, one of only two moving street railways with that status alongside the San Francisco cable cars.
