Iron-on patch

Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument

$8.00

In August 1908, a white mob of about 5,000 attacked Springfield's Black community for three days, burning dozens of Black homes and businesses. Seven deaths were officially recorded at the time, and later research counts at least 17 people dead, among them Scott Burton and William Donnegan, two Black men lynched by the mob. The violence led directly to the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. The national monument, established in 2024, protects 1.57 acres near Madison Street and the 10th Street rail corridor, the archaeological site of several homes destroyed in the riot and a rare physical record of the community the mob tore apart.
