Spring Grove Cemetery

$8.00

Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is a nonprofit rural cemetery and arboretum at 4521 Spring Grove Avenue in Cincinnati, covering 733 acres, about 400 of them landscaped. Members of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society organized a cemetery association in 1844, inspired by Père Lachaise in Paris and Mount Auburn in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the cemetery was chartered on January 21, 1845, and the first burial took place that September. From 1855 landscape architect Adolph Strauch reshaped it into an open garden cemetery of lakes, trees and lawns by limiting private enclosures and monument heights, earning praise from Frederick Law Olmsted. The grounds include 12 ponds, Gothic Revival buildings and national and state champion trees. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007, and its burials include Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, Civil War general Joseph Hooker and Procter & Gamble co-founders William Procter and James Gamble.
