The Spanish Governor's Palace on Military Plaza (Plaza de Armas) is the last visible remnant of the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar, the Spanish garrison founded in 1718 and moved to this site in 1722. Finished by 1749, the date carved with the arms of King Ferdinand VI on the keystone above its door, the one-story masonry building was the home and office of the presidio's captains rather than a governor's palace. The last captain, José Menchaca, sold it in 1804 to the merchant Ignacio Pérez, whose family lived there for about half a century before it was leased to businesses including a pawn shop, saloons and a clothing store. In 1915 the preservationist Adina De Zavala named it the Spanish Governor's Palace and began a campaign to save it; the city bought it in 1928 and finished a restoration in 1930 that left the building larger and more romanticized than the original. It is now a city-run museum and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970.
