Iron-on patch

Southside Park

$8.00

Southside Park is a downtown Sacramento city park at 6th and T streets, built around a natural pond that was once part of a larger marsh used by the Valley Nisenan. The city bought the land in 1906 at the urging of the Southside Improvement Club, filled in a sewage canal, dredged the lake and hired John McLaren, the landscape architect of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, to lay it out. Its 1934 amphitheater carries a mural painted in 1977 by the Royal Chicano Air Force, with Aztec, revolutionary and United Farm Workers imagery. The neighborhood around it was home to Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Slavic and Black families at a time when non-white residents were barred from other parts of the city. Cesar Chavez's 1966 farmworker march from Delano ended here, and the park still hosts the annual Cesar Chavez Day rally.
