Soulard Farmers Market

Soulard Farmers Market is the oldest operating public market in St. Louis and the only one run by the city, in the historic Soulard neighborhood south of downtown. Farmers began selling on the site in 1779, and Julia Cerré Soulard donated the land to the city in the early 1840s on condition that it remain a public market. The current Renaissance-style hall, designed by Albert Osberg and modeled on Brunelleschi's Foundling Hospital in Florence, was built in 1929 after the 1896 tornado wrecked the earlier market. Vendors sell produce, meat, spices and flowers from stalls in its four wings.
