Iron-on patch

Socorro Mission

$8.00

The Socorro Mission, La Purísima Concepción del Socorro, is an adobe church at 328 South Nevarez Road in Socorro, Texas, the second stop on the El Paso Mission Trail between the Ysleta Mission and the San Elizario Presidio Chapel. The mission traces its founding to 1682, when Franciscans established it for Spanish families and Piro, Tano and Jemez people who had fled New Mexico during the Pueblo Revolt. A Rio Grande flood destroyed the earlier church in 1829, and the present stucco-covered adobe church was built around 1839. Inside, painted and decorated vigas made by Piro artisans in 1691 were saved and reused in the new building. The mission is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and remains an active parish of the Catholic Diocese of El Paso.
