Iron-on patch

Smithsonian National Zoo

$8.00

The Smithsonian's National Zoological Park opened in 1889 and occupies 163 acres along Rock Creek in northwest Washington, D.C. Congress created it in part to save the American bison from extinction, and it remains free to enter. It houses roughly 2,200 animals from some 400 species, a substantial share of them threatened or endangered, and is best known to visitors for its giant pandas. A second, closed campus at Front Royal, Virginia, carries out the breeding and conservation research behind much of that work.
