Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum (Burkle Estate)

The Burkle Estate is a one-story white clapboard house at 826 North Second Street, built around 1849 by German immigrant Jacob Burkle, a livestock trader and baker. Local tradition holds that the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad, where freedom seekers hid in a small cellar before boarding boats north, though historians dispute the claim for lack of physical evidence. A trapdoor and a hidden staircase are cited as signs of that role. Since 1997 the house has been the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, which documents slavery, the slave trade and slave auctions in Memphis. The museum's website says it is currently closed to visitors after a fire damaged the house.
