Sica Hollow State Park

Sica Hollow State Park, near Sisseton, South Dakota, protects a forested pocket of the Coteau des Prairies, a hilly glacial highland that stands out from the flat farmland surrounding it. Iron-oxidizing bacteria tint some of the park's streams a deep red, an effect tied to legends of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota people describing the water as the blood of the land. The park's dense woods are unusual for this part of South Dakota, most of which was long ago cleared for agriculture. Hiking trails wind through the hollow past the reddish streams and forest.
