Iron-on patch

Shinzen Friendship Garden

$8.00

The Shinzen Friendship Garden is a 5-acre Japanese stroll garden inside Woodward Park, planned around the four seasons. Local Japanese Americans led by Ben Nakamura proposed it while the park was being built, drawing on Fresno's 1965 sister-city tie with Kochi, Japan. Landscape architect Paul Saito designed it, construction began in 1975, and it was dedicated on May 18, 1981, with a delegation from Kochi attending. A koi pond, a large waterfall and a thatched teahouse built in Japan and reassembled on the pond in 1989 anchor the grounds, which also received more than 100 bonsai in 2015.
