Iron-on patch

Segundo Barrio

$8.00

Segundo Barrio, also called South El Paso, is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, lying just south of downtown between Paisano Drive, the César Chávez Border Highway, Cotton Street and South Mesa Street. From the 1880s it was the first stop for thousands of families arriving from Mexico, which earned it the nickname 'the other Ellis Island'. During the Mexican Revolution it sheltered revolutionaries, spies and journalists, and Francisco Madero lived in several houses in the neighborhood while planning to overthrow Porfirio Díaz. Today it is known for its Chicano murals by local artists such as Jesus 'Cimi' Alvarado, Lxs Dos and Martin 'Blaster' Zubia, which The New York Times called an 'outdoor museum of the border proletariat'. Sacred Heart Church, dedicated in 1893 and still running a tortillería and grill, anchors the neighborhood.
