Iron-on patch

Pioneer Square Underground

$8.00

The Pioneer Square Underground is the network of buried sidewalks, areaways and old ground-floor storefronts beneath the streets and sidewalks of Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood. After the Great Seattle Fire of June 6, 1889 destroyed the business district, the city rebuilt in brick and stone and raised the low, tide-flat streets by as much as a full story, building retaining walls along the new roadways. The spaces left between those walls and the buildings became areaways under the new sidewalks, and the original ground floors turned into basements, which is why their doors and windows are plain while the new street-level floors above are ornate. Glass vault lights, whose clear panes later turned amethyst, still survive in some of the sidewalks above the passages. The city condemned the underground in 1907 over fears of bubonic plague, and only a small part of it has been made safe and opened to the public on guided visits.
