The Sandia Peak Tramway is an aerial tramway that climbs from the northeast edge of Albuquerque to Sandia Peak on the ridgeline of the Sandia Mountains. Opened on May 7, 1966, it was the longest aerial tram in the world until 2010 and is still the longest in North America, with the world's third-longest single span, 7,720 feet between its second tower and the top. Its two 50-passenger cars rise from the base terminal at 6,559 feet to the upper terminal at 10,378 feet in about 15 minutes, passing over Domingo Baca Canyon. The upper terminal sits outside the city in the Cibola National Forest, next to the TEN 3 restaurant and at the top of Sandia Peak Ski Area. The Sandia Crest summit and its visitor center are a separate spot about 1.3 miles north along the ridge, reached by road or trail.
