San Fernando Cathedral

$8.00

San Fernando Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelaria and Guadalupe, faces Main Plaza in downtown San Antonio and is the mother church of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. It was built for the 55 Canary Islands settlers the Spanish Crown sent to San Antonio in 1731: the cornerstone was laid on May 11, 1738, and after a donation from the viceroy in 1748 paid for a master mason from Mexico, the church was dedicated in 1755. Between 1868 and 1873 architect François P. Giraud rebuilt most of the building with a Gothic Revival nave and twin bell towers, keeping only the original sanctuary, and it became a cathedral when the Diocese of San Antonio was created in 1874. In July 1936 a coffin was found buried in front of the altar, where Juan Seguín said he had placed ashes of the Alamo defenders; the remains are attributed to them, though some historians doubt it. It is one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
