San Felipe de Neri Church

$8.00

San Felipe de Neri Church is a Catholic parish church on the north side of Old Town Plaza in Albuquerque. The parish dates to the founding of Albuquerque in 1706, but its first church collapsed in the winter of 1792–93, and the present adobe church was begun in 1793, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city and the only one in Old Town proven to date to the Spanish colonial period. Its cruciform plan, thick adobe walls, wooden vigas and carved corbels date from that construction. The twin Gothic Revival bell towers, added around 1861, and the pitched roof come from a remodel under Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy, and a pressed-tin ceiling was added in 1916. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the church has been in continuous use for more than 200 years.
