Iron-on patch

San Carlos Institute

$8.00

The San Carlos Institute is a Cuban heritage center and museum at 516 Duval Street in Key West. Cuban exiles who had fled the Ten Years' War opened it on November 11, 1871, led by Juan María Reyes and José Dolores Poyo, and after the Great Fire of 1886 damaged its Fleming Street home, the community rebuilt it on Duval Street in 1890. In 1892 José Martí spoke here after uniting Key West's exiles and cigar-factory workers behind the fight for Cuban independence. For more than a century it also ran one of the first bilingual, racially integrated schools in the United States. It closed in 1973, was nearly demolished after part of its facade collapsed in 1981, and reopened in January 1992 after a restoration backed by $2.8 million in state grants. Today it holds exhibits on Martí and Cuban history, a library and a 375-seat theater used by the Key West Literary Seminar.
