Salem Witch House

The Witch House, formally the Jonathan Corwin House, was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin, who sat on the Court of Oyer and Terminer that sent 19 people to the gallows in 1692. Corwin bought the unfinished house in 1675 and lived there for more than 40 years, and accused witches were brought here for pretrial examinations. It is one of the few buildings still standing in Salem with direct ties to the witch trials. The house was moved back from the street around 1940 to save it from a road widening and restored in 1945 to its presumed 17th-century appearance. The City of Salem runs it as a museum, open seasonally for self-guided tours.
