Sacramento Historic City Cemetery

$8.00

The Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, often called the Old City Cemetery, is the oldest existing cemetery in Sacramento, set at 1000 Broadway at 10th Street. It began in 1849, when city founder John Augustus Sutter Jr. donated 10 acres for burials, and in 1850 some 600 victims of the cholera epidemic were buried here in mass graves. The grounds were laid out as a Victorian garden with brick and concrete terraces, fraternal sections for the Masons, Odd Fellows and Sacramento Pioneers, and plots for volunteer firemen and Civil War veterans. Governors John Bigler, Newton Booth and William Irwin, railroad baron Mark Hopkins, Judge Edwin B. Crocker and William S. Hamilton, a son of Alexander Hamilton, are among those buried here. Its roses are said to be among the finest in California.
