San Antonio is where the Rough Riders were born. On May 5, 1898, Colonel Leonard Wood opened a recruiting station on the patio of the Menger Hotel beside the Alamo, and over the following weeks more than 1,200 cowboys, ranch hands, lawmen and Ivy League athletes signed on to the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry — many of them enlisting at the Menger's dark cherrywood bar. Theodore Roosevelt, who had resigned as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to join them, arrived on May 15 and found his regiment already encamped at Camp Wood on the old International Fair Grounds about two miles south of town. There the volunteers spent barely three weeks learning to drill, ride and shoot as a single unit before being ordered to Tampa on May 30, 1898, and on to Cuba. In 1920 the city renamed the camp ground Roosevelt Park in honor of the president and the regiment that trained on it.
